TOPIC for ASSIGNMENT:
ETHICAL ISSUES & CODES OF ETHICS
(VIEW OF ADULT EDUCATION PRACTICIONERS IN CANADA & UNITED STATES)
Rationale
The purpose of this assignment is for learners to think about and consider the relevance of foundational works in adult education discourse within a current setting. You will prepare a critical analysis of ONE foundational work of your choice from Part One of the Merriam text.
Description
Directions to Learners
You will create a critical analysis paper for ONE reading from Part One of the Contemporary Issues in Adult Education reader.
Prepare
• Read the "Overview of the Contents" within the Preface of the Contemporary Issues in Adult Education reader (pp. xviii-xx), and the Overview of Part One itself (pp. 1-5) to understand how and why the foundational works in Part One were selected and specifically, therefore, why your chapter was selected.
• Select ONE of the chapters for the assignment and read it deeply making sure you understand the author's position. Do some background analysis about the author and the timeframe (context) in which they wrote the chapter.
• You may wish to review The Brief Penguin Handbook (Faigley, L., Graves, R. Graves, H) (2014) from 4F31, pp. 48-53 (pp. 41-48 in the 4th ed.) to learn more about writing a critical analysis paper. Please note that the Canadian 4th ed. Is entitled The Brief Pearson Handbook.
Begin the Analysis
• Before you write, decide how you will organize the analysis process for yourself. Analyze the chapter thoroughly and identify the claim the author is making (the author's purpose or thesis statement). This should be stated early in your introduction. Now analyze the chapter in terms of that claim and begin to identify the arguments that support that claim, looking for examples that you can use from the text to support it.
• Consider what the readers will gain from reading your analysis.
• Write an introduction that includes a context for the work, and the claim or thesis statement the author is making. Provide some background information about the author.
• Begin the body of the paper by briefly summarizing the KEY or MAIN points of the chapter in terms of what the author is trying to communicate.
• Organize the body of your paper in terms of your analysis of the author's claim and arguments, and the context for the chapter.
• Include specific examples from the text to show how the author makes his/her own claim.
• Identify any unstated assumptions or steps in the author's argument that are not logical.
• Identify any additional purposes of the work that are not explicitly stated.
• In your analysis specifically address the following:
• Explain the relevance of the work within the broader context of the field of adult education.
• Identify the relevance of the work in a contemporary adult education setting.
• State why you feel this work was selected by the North American panel to be included as an exemplar of the foundation of adult education.
• Write a conclusion that draws larger implications from your analysis and consider providing a vivid example from the text to close off your paper.
• As part of your conclusion, create ONE critical question for further consideration.
