Self-esteem and confidence are two psychologically simple yet very powerful concepts. They command a very important place in human life. Starting its impact from the very childhood of a person, self-esteem plays a very important role in moulding the personality and shaping the confidence of a person. These two factors ultimately decide how a person can in both his personal as well as social life. Low self-esteem is an inherent psychological problem which sows its seeds in a person by certain miserable and unfortunate experiences in his or her childhood. The present assignment discusses the various reasons which give rise to low self-esteem in a person. To counter the problems the problems relating to low self-esteem proper counselling is needed from experts. The counsellor needs to explore the past experiences of the sufferer of low self-esteem before deciding upon the nature of the counselling. For a minority of the people, the low self-esteem may arise because of Down syndrome in which case they need treatment from a clinical psychiatrist. The assignment details various techniques which are useful in retrieving the sufferer from the travails of bitter experiences. Children with special needs are invariably the victims of low self-esteem. They need special care to enliven the self-esteem in them. Such special care is given detailed discussion in the present assignment.
