Description

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium and it attacks any part of the human body such as brain, kidney and especially lungs (Rieder, 2002). If not diagnosed and treated properly it can be fatal and led to death. TB is contagious disease and spreads through air and with effective efforts by WHO there has been significant control on the disease. The treatment of TB is different from other diseases and takes longer time to be completely treated. Also, the treatment involves mixture of drugs, which vary during the treatment process. Due to the financial limitations patients in developing countries do not get the diseases diagnosed and treated effectively which leads to the patient developing multiple drug resistance (Rom & Garay, 2003). World Health Organization addressed this issue by introducing DOTS program, which is effectively used by all the nations and has been improvised further in its new strategy to eliminate TB by the end of 2050. The DOTS program deals with various aspects of the care and treatment of the disease and includes commitment of local government in ensuring that the patients are getting the required access to health care centres without any financial burden. It also includes helping patients with effective diagnosis and monitoring of the disease, standard treatment regimen with directly observation of the effect of treatment, a regular drug supply and has standard recording and reporting system to asses’ treatment effectiveness (Dormandy, 2000).
WHO has made serious efforts in improvising the control and treatment process of TB and is determined to reduce the TB cases significantly by 2015. This intervention has considered the challenges caused due to multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug resistant TB. To address these challenges Stop TB Partnership has been developed under which new health technologies within TB control programmes have been included targeting the global and national-level policy-makers and practitioners. The main approach of the interventions is to engage key stakeholders effectively by including advocacy for timely TB technology evaluation and adoption at global and country level and implement them effectively to provide the best control and treatment services for the patients. Australia has lowest rates of TB in the world but due to increased immigrants there are chances of increase in the TB cases and following the WHO standards the main stakeholders such as the government, NTAC, health care workers etc. are acting towards enhancing the reporting and treating methodologies and continuing to have effective supply of drugs and access to effective diagnosis. The paper analyzes few of the key stakeholder’s involvement in the intervention. The paper then discusses the goals, objectives and outcome of the intervention for TB. In the end it analyzes the existing control and treatment for TB.
