Description

Today the global climate is undergoing a drastic change resulting in environmental disasters like cyclones, tsunamis, premature climate changes, melting of glaciers in the polar caps etc. Scientists all over the globe believe that the main reason for all this is the excessive heating of the planet which is termed as global warming. Global warming other than world war or an asteroid is considered as a major threat to the planet. Scientists consider that the extinction of species like golden toad, harlequin frog of Costa Rica is mainly due to global warming (Global Warming, 2009). All this and many more are a resultant of air pollution. Emissions of green house gases like the carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide methane etc into the atmosphere is the major cause behind global warming. The burning of fuels in industries and the automobiles are the main contributors to the production of such harmful gases into the atmosphere. Delhi is regarded as one of the most polluted cities in the world (Cropper et al., 1997). An air pollution measurement parameter Total Suspended Particulate or TSP is found to be five times greater than average annual standard set by the World Health Organization or WHO (Cropper et al., 1997). The air pollution problem is Delhi is threatening to get out of hand if some drastic preventive and corrective measures are not undertaken (Ministry of Environment & Forests, 1997). This paper tries to analyze the core reasons for unabated increase in air pollution in Delhi. The paper also tries to understand the civic fabric of Delhi that is contribution to the air pollution. The paper analyzes the environmental influences caused by the air pollution. The paper finally makes recommendations on the immediate measures that need to be taken to arrest the rise in pollution levels and bring down the existing pollution levels.
