In the present era, there is a rapid expansion of the day surgery that has made a radical shift in the surgical nursing intervention. Nurses play an important role in the reassessment, providing the information, helping to manage the pain and also post operative anxiety that a patient undergoes. Study reveals that there are a number of problems ranging from the poor attention that the patient experiences from the admission to being discharged. It is true that the patients under go a lot of anxiety and the feel abandoned during their pre operative wait. A research was conducted on the patient’s experiences of the contemporary day surgery. 20 adult patents were observed on by the hermeneutic phenomenological approach and the data was collected by the unstructured interviews. Then the transcript was observed and interpreted using the phenomenological method. The themes emerged from the data that were collected and it ranged from the empowerment feeling felt during preparation, apprehensions encountered and the feeling of being abonded during the preoperative waiting area to recovery dynamics. It is disheartening to notice that majority of the patient felt so abandoned in the preoperative stage. Nurses were not able to recognize the importance of the psychological and the emotional support that the patients need at that point of time. Hence it is important to educate the nurses to extend their emotional support to the patients and to use the techniques like music to reduce the patient’s preoperative anxiety.
