BMC public health 2011, 11:735.), you have been asked to design a study to assess the causal relationship of serum Vitamin D with metabolic syndrome among adults in Penisular Malaysia. Using the information in the article as a guide, plan a study with any design of your choice by addressing the methodological issues as the following:
- What is your research question ? Specify the causal relationship under investigation. (2 marks)
- Who is the source population in your study ? Justify your choice. (2 marks)
- What is the study design of your choice ? If a prospective study is chosen, what is the duration of follow up ? Justify your reasons. (5 marks)
- What will be your sampling strategy and how will you recruit your participants? (4 marks)
- List at least three inclusion and three exclusion criteria for participation in this study. (3 marks)
- What will be the primary method of data collection? Will it be supplemented with other methods if you have difficulty obtaining data from the participants ? (4 marks)
- How will you characterise exposure ? Please consider issues such as defining the exposure, how frequent you will measure/assess the exposure, if you will measure exposure dose etc. (4 marks)
- How will you characterise the outcome? Please consider issues such as defining the outcome, validation of outcome etc. (4 marks)
- Think about three confounders you would measure in your study and briefly discuss how they meet the criteria for confounding. (3 marks)
- In a logical sequence, list three appropriate dummy tables you will use to analyse your data. What measure of association will you use and give reason/s. (9 marks)
