Description

Around 422 million adults suffer from diabetes worldwide and the condition is becoming a major problem in developing and poor nations as per World Health Organization (WHO) study (Kelland, 2016). Diabetes is referred to as diabetes mellitus by medical professionals and it describes group of metabolic diseases wherein an individual has high blood glucose i.e. blood sugar either due to inadequate production of insulin or because body cells do not respond properly to insulin or both the conditions (Hu, 2011). Diabetes can be of Type 1 or Type 2. In Type 1 diabetes body does not produce insulin and around 10% of all diabetes cases are of type 1 (WHO, 2017). In Type 2 diabetes body does not produce enough insulin to carry out proper functioning of the body and around 90% of all diabetes cases across the world suffer from this type (Hu, 2011). There are several factors, which increase the risk of diabetes. This essay aims at identifying some of the factors, which lead to one of the types of diabetes. This essay aims to prove the following thesis statement Diabetes is becoming a major global risk, which can be controlled by addressing the risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity and alcohol.
