This report is based on the following case study - - Case Study
- The port of Singapore comprises a number of facilities and terminals that handle a wide range of cargo transported in different forms, including containers as well as conventional and bulk cargo. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is responsible for the overall development and growth of the port of Singapore, which includes terminal operators, such as PSA Corporation and Jurong Port Pte Ltd.
- The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was established on 2 February 1996, with the mission to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime centre (IMC), and to advance and safeguard Singapore's strategic maritime objectives which are quality, environmental sustainability, competitiveness, reliability and efficiency. MPA is the driving force behind Singapore's port and maritime development, taking on the roles of Port Authority, Port Regulator, Port Planner, IMC Champion, and National Maritime Representative. MPA partners, the industry and other agencies to enhance safety, security and environmental protection in our port waters, facilitate port operations and growth, expand the cluster of maritime ancillary services, and promote maritime R&D and manpower development.
- One of the roles of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is to develop Singapore as a centre of excellence for maritime research and development (R&D). This bolsters the competitive edge of Singapore’s maritime cluster, which is central to Singapore’s growth as an international maritime centre. MPA has established a framework to build Singapore as an international centre of excellence for maritime R&D by developing partnerships with tertiary and research institutions (TRIs) and the maritime industry. - A special Supply Chain Management (SCM) and logistics team was employed for R&D framework to study how to meet the strategic objectives of MPA in relation to Cargo transport. You have been selected as one of the team members of an advisory team to answer these questions.
Description
This report answers the following questions on the case study -
You are strongly advised by the executive team to use your knowledge from your research and education in university. You were asked to provide an academic report (2500 words) to clearly address these tasks as follow:
Task 1 (Max 1000 Words) (40% Mark)
Critically evaluate the implementation of lean and agility strategies in MPA to promote their long term strategic maritime objectives which are quality, environmental sustainability, competitiveness, reliability and efficiency. You are required to compare and contrast application of lean, agility and also interface of these two as Leagility in global maritime logistics to achieve the long term objectives. It is required to identify the lean and Agility principles and techniques and then critically evaluate their benefits and limitations towards these long term strategic objectives in MPA. Then, critically evaluate how and why Leagility can be a better strategy to be considered to achieve those long term objectives.
Task 2 (Max 1000 Words) (40% Mark)
Critically evaluate the role of TQM and its tools and techniques to present the MPA as the center of excellence in early future. You are required to identify main TQM tools and techniques and then analyse what could be key benefits and limitations of TQM and its tools and techniques towards transforming MPA to an excellent business model. You must investigate the day-to-day practical limitations in MPA against application of TQM culture and its tools and techniques.
