Description

With the emerging and evolving concepts of globalization, economic integration across the world has turned the organizations into a distributed organization. The organizations are now characterized as an organization with geographically dispersed activities. Such organizations are scattered and attempt to unify through the means of information and communication technology (Currie, Wendy, 1960-Galliers, Robert, 1947). Today, many of the organizations rely on information and communication technology to integrate the business functions scattered in different parts of the world.
Ciborra, C. states that, application of ICT serves as an integral part of an organization which brings in close coordination and increased knowledge sharing among nations. ICT effectively does the function of data collection, turning into meaningful information and then analyze it to draw a meaningful conclusion. The application of ICT tools has been able to successfully connect people, diversified functions and various units into a particular line. The use of ICT tools have grown substantially as it controls various work processes.
According to Monge and Contracter (2003), not much academic literature and research is available on the application of ICT tools in organizations. Yuan, Fulk, Matsaganis (2003) hold that, not much research is available on theory of close integration of organization’s work processes and its alignment with ICT tools. On the other hand, researchers like Dutton, Kahin and Wyckoff (2005) are of the opinion that social capital theory and trust alongwith media viability explains the role of ICT tools and its application in modern business. Many researchers explain a close link between ICT, networking, and then linking all parts of business into one by use of these information technology tools as a medium for communication. To make this networking effective, organizations should follow a formal organizational structure, a close coordinated team for project handling and also knowledge sharing networks (Gibson & Cohen, 2003).
The report is aimed at taking a closer look at the application of information and communication technology for the success of failure of the projects. The briefing notes starts with what is meant by information and communication technology, its components and impact on the projects. In the later half, it discusses the major causes of project failures in large organizations and theory, framework for IS success.
