– Football or soccer is the game, which is followed by most people in the world than any other sport. Soccer is more popular in Europe, Central and South America than in North America or Asia. Football sport has grown to the extent that it has become a corporate business with many clubs contracting highly performing players and promoting the sport as a brand. The businesses sponsor the players and clubs to advertise and promote their products. Football has grown over the centuries from a mere sport to national identity, business and as cultural symbol in many countries. The European countries and the Central and South American countries attach more value and recognition to football than most of the countries in the world. The game requires statistics to be maintained about the teams, about the players, about the events etc. in order to have an organized and well documented approach to the game. Football League Management System (FLMS) is a software application being developed to help football leagues to record and maintain match, player, team, and club statistics. The purpose of this report is to provide a background to the FLMS project by giving a brief of history of football, game rules, and scoring system, how league matches are played etc.
