- This essay is based on the following requirement -
- You will submit an individual essay, critically analysing a key management concept. You need to
- first select a management concept and second choose an article which discusses the concept.
- You need to choose a ‘current’ (i.e. 2012 onwards) article, of your choice. The article should be
- from an accredited management journal. The article should draw on one major management
- concept which is covered in the course. Students are encouraged to draw on a concept which
- was covered in the lectures up to the date of the submission process (that is, up to the end of
- topic 5).
- Your analysis should consider the following points:
- 1. Set the context: describe the main management concept and the organization your main
- article makes reference to. Be sure to draw on details from the article itself.
- 2. Use theory to explain the functional nature of this management concept. What are the
- theoretical building blocks? What does the literature propose? This is your opportunity
- to use management theory as adapted from the course.
- 3. How has this management concept been applied? What purpose does this concept
- hope to serve? How has this concept been portrayed in your article? Is the portrayal a
- favourable one?
- 4. Can you establish any ‘linkages” between your main concept and any other concept(s)
- taught in the course? For example, if ‘business ethics’ is your main management
- concept, then how would a culture of poor managerial ethics potentially impact on
- employee morale?
- 5. What impact has the application of this management concept had or will have on the
- organization’s performance? Think along the lines of organizational and business
- outcomes. How favourable are these outcomes for the organization?
- 6. Students are NOT permitted to use any of the articles from the tutorial program
- or those listed on the LMS. The onus is on students to source their own
- article.
- 7. When submitting your essay, you will be required to submit your main article as
- well!
