Description

Andrew Shepherd (2004) has rightly mentioned in his article that there are around 3000 cold storages in India having a capacity of 8.7 million tones. With the beginning of operations of the cold stores which are under construction, the total capacity will rise to 10 million tones. Still, there will be a shortage of 1 million ton during the peak period. Out of the total cold storage capacity in India, 48% is in Uttar Pradesh and 26% is in West Bengal. The state of Maharashtra has a cold storage capacity of only 0.35 million tones. On the other hand, Maharashtra produces 12% of the fruits and 10% of vegetables of India. Maharashtra accounts for 30% of the export of fruits and vegetables and 50% of the export of processed food from India. Thus, it was very much necessary to open up a cold storage infrastructure facility in the State of Maharashtra. Considering the demand and supply factor, Maharashtra has a huge demand for cold storage facility.
