- Background You are responsible for network planning a new office for a SME company. The company runs an
online supermarket business, as a competitor to ColesOnline and Woolworth Homeshop. The
company has 10,000 clients online across Australia.
The company has 5 developers/system-administrators, 5 sales/marketing, and 10 customer support
employees sharing this office.
In this new office, each employee has one desktop computer and one IP-phone on his/her desk. The
company also provides each employee a tablet device. Employees are put into different rooms
according to their divisions (development, marketing, customer support), and one multi-function
printer shared by all divisions. There’s a meeting room with a projector system setup.
The company uses 5 server machines inside this office to host the online-shopping service, and these
servers are configured under a multi-tier architecture (refer to lecture module 2.) The company uses
2 additional server machines for other applications such as authentication-authorisation-account,
staff email, and network storage services.
Network service recommendation (30 marks) Estimate the network usage and recommend a business broadband service plan
Hint: you can roughly estimate individual traffic usage by accessing a standard online supermarket.
You will need to give a reasonable estimate of the number of con-current users, and the frequency
of their access to the website. In your discussion you will need to state any assumptions that you
used to come up with your estimate.
Network Diagram (15 marks) Propose a network layout by drawing a network diagram. An example of network diagram can be
found in the troubleshooting question below. These diagrams include the physical equipment,
logical connections, and IP address assignment. The network should be divided into internal and
external networks.
Floor plan layout and network cabling (30 marks) Draw a simple floor plan and show how the cables are connected. A sample floorplan (without
cables) can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Office_plane.svg.
