- Report: A comparative evaluation of two different approaches to knowledge management
We have organised much of this unit around what we have termed different ‘approaches’ to KM, where the particular approach is defined by what is seen as the main or focal issue in the KM. For example, we described ‘KM Approach 1’ as the Knowledge as Personal approach, because the main issue is seen to be making use of knowledge that is held by individuals, often tacit in nature. We also noted that nearly all examples of KM in use would include elements of different approaches: for example, once tacit knowledge has been elicited, it needs to be represented and stored in some way, as documents or other artefacts (KM Approach 3), or in some knowledge representation language (KM Approach 5&6).
The purpose of the assignment is for you to think critically and in depth about two of these approaches. It will involve some reading and library research. You have not had to research the KM literature yourself yet: this is your opportunity to.
