Description

Information Technology is as much responsible for greenhouse gases as are international airlines companies. So, Information Technology has an almost similar responsibility of protecting the environment as do international airline companies. Information technology industry is better placed in this regard as compared to airline companies since computers can be run on alternate energy sources while airplanes cannot. Thus, it falls upon business houses to initiate suitable measures towards reduction of carbon emission. The other benefit of such a measure is a reduction in energy bill which often runs into substantial amounts if companies depend exclusively on electricity. Thus, green IT not only helps reduce environmental pollution buts also assists companies to tide over acute competition and stifling cash flow situations. Green IT also undertakes a minute analysis of current status of insulation in data centers and also analyses the position and number of windows in the existing building that houses a data center. Often proper insulation and repositioning or rationalizing the number of windows and other apertures ensures no unwanted leakage of cool air takes place thereby reducing the workload of air conditioners. Green IT aims at tapping alternate sources of renewable energy that is not only mostly free but also requires minimal infrastructure to harness it properly. Marketers of IT products should also try to remain above the all consuming profit motive and refrain from bringing out newer models every three months. That would further save a lot of unnecessary wastage of electricity that goes into manufacturing newer models.
