Description
Times gone by can either create nostalgic feelings in one’s mind and heart or can stir ghastly memories of pain and turmoil. Arna Bontemps poem ‘Southern Mansion’ appears to have been written with the latter narrative. The poem creates a vivid picturization of gentile folks and slaves doing their chores on any normal day in and around the mansion. The feelings generated however, are haunting rather than the reminiscences of good old times! This short analysis of the poem attempts to understand as to what the poet tries to convey through this poem.
