In an article in Economic Times stated, Tescos has been able to successfully make a foray in the Indian market. Tesco in partnership with the Tata group has made its entry in India’s Star Bazaar, operating in metropolitan cities. The largest retail giant of UK has made its foray in India, offering different products from kid’s nappies to shampoos for adults. One can find all the products that are offered by the super marts at Tesco Trents. 58 different products of Tescos have occupied shelves of cash and carry business in Indian retail market. The planning strategy of Tescos entry in India was very unique and today, they form a large part of the retail market share in India.
Tesco has entered in Indian retail market on the cash and carry model. Tesco has made a back door entry in the Indian retail market and supply the products to the front line companies in India. The company plays an important role by supplying their products to kirana stores, caterers, hotels. Tesco is catering to the need of 12 million small traders in India (Indian Express, 2008). To make it easy, Tesco has set up distribution centre in Delhi and Bangalore. Through these distribution centers, Tesco is able to supply their products in small town and cities adjoining Delhi and Bangalore in a cost effective manner. The company has attained a lot of success in the early years of its existence and this is why the company plans to invest in opening more distribution centers across India.
Tesco has made an investment of 60 million pounds in India to expand their distribution centers in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore as reported by Angela Balakrishnan, in Guadian.co.uk. The key success factors of Tescos operations in India lies in the effective distribution channel, supply chain management, cold storage and IT management system. All the products ranging from food to electronics can be found at Trent’s hyper mart – Star Bazaar.
