Crime mapping is an effective step in identifying as well as preventing criminal activities. It is a significant methodology approached by analysts in law enforcement agencies in order to “map, visualize, and analyze crime incident patterns.” (Crime Mapping 2009) Mapping a crime using Geographic Information Systems or GIS allows crime analysts to identify crime hot spots beside other useful trends and patterns. This paper addresses the relevance of crime mapping along with the use of GIS applications in the context of crime reduction and crime prevention.
GIS plays a very significant role in crime mapping and analysis. It captures, stores and analyzes the data related to the location of the crime.
