Description
There are numerous species, which form an important part of biodiversity (Mazzotti 1). The identification of species as endangered is the first step to identifying threats faced by the species and the need for implementing conservation act (Biodiversitya-z 1). Endangered species generally refer to the risk of species becoming extinct (Armsworth, Kappel and Micheli 244). Extinction is a natural process but today most species of plants and animals are becoming extinct due to habitat destruction, direct killing and introduction of non-native organisms. Marine species are increasingly finding their names listed under the Endangered Species Act at an alarming rate (Armsworth, Kappel and Micheli 244). While it is important to promote industrial activities in the region to sustain the increasing needs of the civilized world such as food, supplies and energy through maritime operations, it is also important to maintain biodiversity of the oceans. This essay discusses the impending extinction of North Atlantic right whales, if adequate conservation measures are not put in place. The essay discusses as important question as to whether the human maritime activities should be undertaken at the cost of harming marine ecosystem and thereby endangering species such as the North Atlantic right whale.
